Observational Evidence for Small-Scale Mixture of Weak and Strong Fields in the Quiet Sun

چکیده

Three different maps of the quiet Sun, observed with the Advanced Stokes Polarimeter (ASP) and the Diffraction-Limited Stokes Polarimeter (DLSP), show evidence of strong (≃1700 G) and weak (<500 G) fields coexisting within the resolution element both at network and internetwork locations. The angular resolution of the observations is of 1(ASP) and 0.6 (DLSP), respectively. Even at the higher DLSP resolution, a significant fraction of the network magnetic patches harbor a mixture of strong and weak fields. Internetwork elements that exhibit kG fields when analyzed with a single-component atmosphere are also shown to harbor considerable amounts of weak fields. Only those patches for which a single-component analysis yields weak fields do not show this mixture of field strengths. Finally, there is a larger fractional area of weak fields in the convective upflows than in the downflows. Proper integration time of polarization signals of internetwork regions using Sunrise/IMaX data

Distribution of magnetic fields in the quiet-Sun internetwork areas has been affected by weak polarization (in particular Stokes Q and U) signals. To improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the weak polarization signals, several approaches, including temporal integrations, have been proposed in the literature. In this study, we aim to investigate a proper temporal-integration time with which...

Turbulent magnetic fields in the quiet Sun: implications of Hinode observations and small-scale dynamo simulations

Using turbulent MHD simulations (magnetic Reynolds numbers up to≈ 8000) and Hinode observations, we study effects of turbulence on measuring the solar magnetic field outside active regions. Firstly, from synthetic Stokes V profiles for the FeI lines at 6301 and 6302 Å, we show that a peaked probability distribution function (PDF) for observationally-derived field estimates is consistent with a ...

Infrared lines as probes of solar magnetic features XIII. The relative flux in weak and strong quiet-sun magnetic fields

An estimate of the fraction of magnetic flux in intrinsically weak-field form, i.e. fields with less than 1 kG intrinsic strength, in the quiet Sun is presented. We find that on average approximately 2/3 of the flux is in weak-field form, although our data allow a range of values between 25% and 85%. These estimates have been derived with the help of radiative transfer model calculations from l...

Coronal Heating, Weak Mhd Turbulence and Scaling Laws

Long-time high-resolution simulations of the dynamics of a coronal loop in cartesian geometry are carried out, within the framework of reduced magnetohydrodynamics (RMHD), to understand coronal heating driven by motion of field lines anchored in the photosphere. We unambiguously identify MHD anisotropic turbulence as the physical mechanism responsible for the transport of energy from the large ...

Quiet Sun Magnetic Field Measurements Based on Lines with Hyperfine Structure

The Zeeman pattern of Mn I lines is sensitive to hyperfine structure (HFS) and, because of this reason, they respond to hG magnetic field strengths differently from the lines commonly used in solar magnetometry. This peculiarity has been employed to measure magnetic field strengths in quiet Sun regions. However, the methods applied so far assume the magnetic field to be constant in the resoluti...
